A church is also a Home for Community
Folkehuset Absalon
For thousands of years, the church has always been the “second home” to many in Europe. Religion stays, but not necessarily, the architecture of faith could remain. Unfortunately, this is the case we observe in the continent. Shrinking population and plunging membership have caused hundreds of church buildings to close across Europe. In Denmark, for the past 10 years, voices from church officials have been calling for new solutions to tackle the phenomenon of underutilized church buildings.
Among all the discussions of the future plans, the bishops and the locals hoped the revitalisation projects would be community-centred. Folkehuset Absalon has become the inspiration for other churches.
Folkehuset Absalon was one of the six churches being closed by the Danish government in 2013. It was stroke with headlines and debates over how to deal with the abandoned church buildings. It was until 2014, when the founder of renowned creative variety store chain, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, put more than DKK 10 million to acquire the key of Folkehuset Absalon and start revitalising the once-holy building.
Finally, in 2015, the church was transformed and reopened into a community centre for neighbours to gather. Inside the church building, the silent and holy space is now a giant living room, with a lower ceiling and comfortable furniture in bright colours. The atmosphere is welcoming and helps to activate social interaction for people from different backgrounds.
What is even more motivating is how the team of Folkehuset Absalon has continuously been organising workshops and events for the community to attach. From their busy calendar, you can find activities like yoga classes, walking tours in the neighbourhood and even mini-concerts. They also organise daily dinner event opening to locals and tourists. Five to six people will sit at the same table to share food in the warm and inviting space. Folkehuset Absalon has undoubtedly relived as the “second home” to people in Copenhagen.
The successful transformation of Folkehuset Absalon has proved how adaptive re-use could regenerate both physical and community environment.
When we discuss future revitalisation project in Hong Kong, how often have we taken into account the balance between spatial conversion and programme viability? To connect people, we may need the GUTS from Folkehuset Absalon, creating a continuous effort to tie the community closer together. Time to look at the empty or abandoned buildings around your neighbourhood!
