A shopping mall is a co-working space

A shopping mall is a co-working space

Bangkok is one of the favourite travel destinations for Hong Kongers. Amid the luxury shopping malls tourists frequently visit, Samyan Mitrtown is opened in September last year with a totally different ambition. It is not only designed as a community-based shopping environment for locals. Samyan Mitrtown is envisioned to serve the local community by creating a free co-working space for 24 hours a day.

Located in Rama 4 road, Samyan Mitrtown was built in the business centre of Bangkok next to Chulalongkorn University. Taking a visionary step among its competitors, Samyan Mitrtown positions itself as a combination of business and community hub. The "Urban Life Library" concept runs through the six-storey block. Dividing the retail space into "Living", "Eating" and "Learning" areas, some restaurants and cafes open 24 hours every day to serve the working locals.

Renowned architect firm, onion, designed the Samyan CO-OP as a 500-seat co-working space located in the "Learning" section. Discovering some users can have better focus in a slightly busy and lively environment, the architect decided to build a space for the variety of spatial needs. There are 5 hubs built in the 15,000 sqft area, creating a range of quiet, open, private or multifunctional spaces for all.

The architect connected the 5 hubs by corridors and alleyways with seating. The envelope with transparent glass allows each space to fill with light. This unique quality of mobility and flexibility allows Samyan CO-OP to offer a user-friendly space promoting social interaction. The project has been a big success since its opening last year. The space is nearly fully booked every day and has become the best hub for locals to study.

Bridging commercial space with daily community life can create added values and a potential new typology for the next-generation shopping malls. Perhaps this example from Bangkok could be our food for thought?
