Can our everyday shopping malls rediscover their public value?

Far from mere retail hubs, these daily necessities hold untapped potential for community connection. The first zine, Publicness in Retail Space Is...?, explores the dilemmas and breakthrough potential of Hong Kong’s shopping malls. We trace their historical evolution, draw inspiration from global cases, and examine barriers created by local ownership and regulations.

The companion zine, The Urban Blind Box Is...?, captures the process and reflections of a spatial observation activity. In 2025, the team led twelve "community explorers" into two distinct malls. By stepping into the field, we translate overlooked dialogues to reveal a diverse retail ecology, discovering how the public's "everyday wisdom" could inspire future spatial design. This issue documents four critical questions about Hong Kong’s mall spaces, alongside an event summary.

Produced by One Bite Design Studio's research initiative GUTS, this two-part collection invites you to rethink the spaces we navigate daily.
