    Location: West Kowloon Cultural District

Client: West Kowloon Cultural District Authority

    Completion: 2025

    Area: 2,000 sqm

Commissioned by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority to transform the existing pet zone, WestK Pet Club adds a new animal-friendly amenity to Hong Kong’s urban fabric.

The 2,000-square-metre site features a vibrant picnic-themed concept that serves as both a visual and graphical foundation. Local cultural icons like Hong Kong-style pineapple buns and a variety of pet motifs establish a playful and distinct identity. The inclusive spirit is emphasised through extensive pet representations, inviting all companion animals to feel welcome.

The Pet Club comprises two zones. The Lawn Zone is designed for active play and structured engagement, featuring picnic-inspired forms and robust agility obstacles. Play elements such as the Doughnut Tunnel, Sandwich Platform, Giant Book Climber, Pet Measurement Board, Wicky Mirror Selfie Spot, and picnic basket-inspired furniture accommodate pets of all sizes and abilities. Multi-layered steps and flat platforms encourage exploration, rest, and interaction.

The Runaway Zone offers a more tranquil setting for leisurely strolls and relaxation. Floral, pond, and duckling motifs create a soothing picnic atmosphere, making it an ideal social space for pet families to gather and capture memorable moments.

Overall, the design seamlessly integrates play, socialisation, and local identity to enrich the public realm. This project represents a meaningful step in Hong Kong’s journey toward becoming a more pet-friendly city, addressing the pressing need for quality green spaces where pets and people can coexist comfortably in the dense urban environment.

Redefining Outdoor Recreation for a More Animal-Friendly City

  • The WestK Pet Club represents a thoughtful enhancement of urban recreational space dedicated to pets and their families, improving quality of life in a dense city environment. It opens up valuable outdoor areas where pets can exercise, socialise, and interact safely alongside pet owners and friends. The design cleverly balances active and passive uses with pet-friendly features that encourage healthy movement and relaxation.

The project subtly elevates the public realm by recognising pets as important members of urban communities. It responds to a practical need for dedicated pet amenities, helping to normalise pet-friendly spaces in Hong Kong’s high-density context. In doing so, the Pet Club fosters positive community engagement and small but meaningful improvements to everyday city living for both pets and people. This measured approach highlights the potential for modest interventions to enhance urban wellbeing and inclusivity without overstatement.
