Luen Wo Market Exhibition won Special Mention at HKICON Awards 2024
10th November 2025, Hong Kong
Connecting a community with its heritage has been the red thread of many of our projects that are particularly meaningful to us. The Luen Wo Market Exhibition, which has just received the Special Mention in the Interpretation Category at the Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists Awards (HKICON) 2024, is a case in point.
Commissioned by Lutheran Luen Wo Market, onebite designed the heritage interpretation zone for this remarkable exhibition at Luen Wo Market in Fanling, Hong Kong. Spearheaded by Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, the 1951-built Grade III historic building commenced a conservation and restoration scheme in 2017.
This exhibition, which took place after the Market was reopened in the first quarter of 2024, was an immersive journey through time and culture, turning the off-white construction into a vibrant showcase of artefacts, anecdotes, photographs, and interactive displays highlighting the rich heritage and stories of this iconic marketplace.
The interplay of sights and sounds filling the bustling halls was a multi-sensory tribute to the local traditions that shaped the neighbourhood to the present, celebrating the preservation and revival of Luen Wo Market's legacy, as well as the intricate relationship between the rural and urban environment in the city.
To us, the showcase captured the soul of Fanling, fostering local knowledge, and interpreting the market's rich history through an immersive experience—one that felt both reflective of the past and vibrantly part of the present community.
As we proudly receive the SPECIAL MENTION in the Interpretation Category at the HKICON 2024 Awards, we would like to shout out a massive thank you to our incredible partners who brought this vision to life.
