Science in Art Exhibition

''Innovation hinges on our ability to see things differently'', onebite’s Managing Director and Guest Curator for Science in Art explains his concept for the exhibition. “Two seemingly different disciplines, art and science, are the perfect duo to help us to see things from a new perspective”

To mark the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong SAR’s establishment, onebite was commissioned by the Art Promotion Office and the Science Promotion Unit under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department to organise a six-month long open-air exhibition at Tamar Park, Admiralty to showcase nine sets of large-scale outdoor art installations that combined art, science and technology, drawing on physics, engineering and mathematics to create spectacular works of art and lighting effects that truly embodied the unique twin appeal of Victoria Harbour as a culturally rich and technologically advanced maritime hub.

onebite collaborated with six groups of artists, namely Chun-kit Cheuk, HIR Studio, Napp Studio & Architects, New Office Works, Studio RYTE, Whiteground to create artworks that encouraged the audience to engage and interact with them in different ways. For example, by stepping into the Water Capsule Submarine or by pedalling the Ornithopter, onebite hopes visitors would not only experience art from a unique perspective, but also understand the significance of sustainability more deeply and appreciate the wonders of flight in nature.

In addition to the six artworks, the exhibition also included the works of cross-disciplinary artist Victor Wong, and the illusion drawings of young artists Brenda Hui, KK Leung, and Oldgrand.ma. The six month long Science in Art exhibition, running from July to December 2022, aimed to create a unique experience for visitors, as they meander through the park to enjoy these usually common spaces shrouded in a stunning play of light and shadow.

As Science in Art was held during one of the Covid pandemic waves, a series of virtual events was organised to bring the experience of Science in Art right in the convenience of one’s phone or computer screen. For example, an interactive platform called "Tamar Multiverse", was launched on the virtual social platform gather.town in October 2022 for audiences to interact directly with participating artists online. Everyone was invited to visit the artists in their unique curated rooms and learn about the fascinating stories behind their artworks. The exhibition also employed various virtual presentation means such as Youtube videos and 360o virtual tours to connect with a global audience during and even after the duration of the on-site exhibition.

Art x Science

  • Science in Art was held during one of the Covid pandemic waves in Hong Kong and as such, some activities were converted from physical events to online meetings. Using platforms and technologies such as gather.town, 360-degree virtual tours, and Youtube videos, the exhibition’s curator and artists were able to provide a direct and more intimate interaction with audiences within and beyond Hong Kong during these special events. These communications channels continue to be hosted on its own dedicated website after the exhibition period, giving the artworks a “second life” that reaches out to even more virtual visitors.

The concept itself, the combination of science and art brought cross-disciplinary collaboration to the forefront and allowed Hong Kong to spearhead a new paradigm in interactive arts and augmented reality.
