gift330

Since 2019, onebite and New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (NLPRA) embarked on gift330, a collaborative project that sought to transform art pieces by People in Recovery (PIR) from mental illnesses into lifestyle products.

The project has multiple meanings. The word 'gift' means both 'present' and 'talent' in English. Thus, gift330 is not just a project to make physical objects for gifting; it also represents the unique talents of every PIR responsible for making these presents.

For onebite designers, “present” is more than just an object. It also symbolises “this moment in time’', as we hope gift330 could represent and celebrate a key milestone on every PIR artist’s journey of recovery. The creative process is integrated into their healing. Creativity increases their confidence, develops positivity, and provides joy for artists. By turning their artworks into exquisite and meaningful gifts, gift330 also hopes the public could appreciate and understand the inner world of PIRs and help them to better integrate into society.

gift330 is in the process of launching three series of products through three themes related to daily life: "Eat", "Travel", and "Live", with products for the first two themes released in 2020 and 2023 respectively.

  • Under the 2020 “Eat” collection, onebite worked with PIR artists to transform their art pieces into lifestyle products that showcase their creativity and demonstrate how everyone has the ability to connect with society through artistic expressions. Some products included washable cloth aprons and tea towels, reusable stainless steel water bottles, crockery, and beeswax wrap. The latter is designed as an alternative to disposable cling film and to reduce our use of plastics in daily life. Instead, the beeswax wrap is made from natural elements and the patterns likewise embody the concept of green living and incorporate popular farm produce grown locally, such as strawberry, mushroom, peppers, and eggplants.

These patterns are hand-painted by PIR artists with onebite designing how these patterns would be placed in the crockery, utensils and other products. The disjointed or interrupted patterns became an intentional feature for users to find unexpected “completed” patterns when viewed at certain angles. This not only brings surprise and makes the discovery moment a memorable “gift”; it also wants to bring out the point of looking beyond the surface and explore deeper meanings, just like how we hope the public can appreciate the multi-faceted talents of PIRs.

  • For the second series of products on “travel”, onebite brought together gift330 and Hong Kong Tramways Company to design a series of products reinterpreting the tram as a symbol of Hong Kong city in a heartfelt way. These products, such as umbrella and lapel pin, feature tram patterns hand-drawn by PIRs.

To kick-off the project, Hong Kong Tramways Company, also affectionately known as “Ding Ding” amongst Hongkongers, provided a special tram tour for gift330’s PIR artists to inspire their artistic creation. The artists not only got to experience and observe the scenery along the tram route between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, but they also got a special tour around the rarely-opened tram depot and learnt about the history and cultural background of trams.

In conjunction with 2023’s Chinese New Year, onebite and gift330 joined hands to transform one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most enduring forms of transport in everyday life, into a vehicle of beauty and inspiration through colourful and vibrant artworks. They adorned the interior and exterior of Tram #30, using a colour palette that pairs the auspicious tangerine colour with the iconic verdant shade of “HK Tram Green” used on trams. The interior is decorated with images of trams interpreted by PIR artists with brief introductions to the artworks and PIR artists, just like an art gallery. The exterior features the adorable Tramways mascot "Ding Ding Cat" to spread Chinese New Year cheers as the tram plied along Hong Kong Island.

onebite also worked with gift330 to create a series of Chinese New Year products for the Hong Kong tram, including a New Year's gift box which featured embossed geometric decorations inspired by the shape of tram tracks. It also included limited-edition festive items like laisee red packets and prosperity faichun couplets as well as organic fruit tea from the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association's Sheltered Workshop brand.

The message "Ding Ding Wealthy, Healthy Mind and Body" is featured prominently on the tram, as well as the Chinese New Year products. It wishes everyone a fruitful New Year not just in terms of accumulating wealth, but also maintaining a healthy mind and body which echoes the Tramway collaboration’s English tagline "Have a RelexDing Year!

gift yourself a moment

  • The purpose of this event is to provide a platform for the creative work of the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association's rehabilitated individuals. The gift330 project recognizes the artistic talents of People in Recovery (PIR). It does so not just by using art as a form of therapy, but also promoting their work to the community, with a portion of proceeds from the sale of their products going to the artists themselves, which increase their self-confidence.

gift330 products are used in everyday life. The daily use of household objects strengthens the connection between the public and PIRs, fulfilling the objective that not only artists can create, but in fact everyone can create beautiful artworks. The project also worked with other organisations, such as the HK Tramways Company, to create opportunities for PIRs to work with different organisations and communities to increase their competitiveness in society.

The different products in this gift330 project enable us to rethink the meaning of "gift". It is not only a heart-warming item "gifted" to a beloved one, but also recognised PIRs as “gifted” individuals, who needs everyone’s support to better integrate into society.
